Fit me – post 1

Kfbunny: Wii Me

My Mii

Two years ago, I came to the realisation that I was overweight, not by alot, but enough that I could feel it.  Having been athletic earlier in my life, the decade of sloth and indulgence had caught up to me.  With a new-found love of the Wii, I challenged myself to lose 20lbs as long as it took.  14 weeks later, I’d lost 18 and was satisfied.  Then I gave up.

Fast forward to 2012, I find myself in nearly the same situation as where I started in 2010.  Today, I weighed in at 83.5kg (184lbs), my highest ever. I feel heavy. I feel things jiggle.  I feel sluggish. I look ok head-on, but in profile, like I’m turning into my Grampa as I knew him–a great and fair man, but definitely short and plump. I don’t like how my clothes fit on me (they don’t). I don’t feel young anymore or like the picture of me I have in my head.

This must change and it will.  I plan to diet and exercise as I did two years ago.  I plan to hold myself accountable by blogging each week with results.

Rocco the rockstar!

My baby puppy (actually 10 years old) was diagnosed with Diabetes.  The first thought that ran through my mind was ‘oh good, at least it’s not a fatal kidney failure.’  For about a week, he had started being unable to make it through the night without peeing.  At first, he’d wake me up almost at the time I normally get up, prompting me to take him outside.  Then it got worse to the point where he’d just pee in his bed, most likely while sleeping.  He’d come in after peeing and gulp up more than the recommended amount of water and then need to go again a mere few hours later.  I even counted 49 seconds during one of the fountains that were released while he stood on one leg diligently.

One trip to the vet, some bloodwork and phone call later and I’m now giving him twice daily injections of insulin, after meals.  I was terrified that doing this would result in him becoming comatose or causing him undue pain.  I’m thankful these fears were unfounded.  He’s doing well so far.

Our routine
6:45 – Ian gets up.
7:00 – He takes Rocco outside to pee.

7:45 – He wakes me up.
8:00AM – Rocco and I eat our breakfasts.
8:20 – I take Rocco out to pee;  Ian goes to work.
8:30 – I wash Rocco’s paws. I put him on the island on a special towel we picked out just for injections.  I follow the injections procedure (see below).
8:37 – Rocco runs to his bed to eat a post-injection treat.
12:00 – I take Rocco out to pee again.
8:00PM – We feed Rocco.
8:20 – We give Rocco another injection and another treat.
12:00 – I take Rocco out to pee for the last time in the evening.

Injection Procedure

  1. Hold the insulin bottle and move it back and forth to mix up the fluid.
  2. Put the need in the end of the bottle while holding it upside down.
  3. Pull the plunger to fill the needle with fluid.  Push the plunger until it’s back to 2 units.
  4. Tap the needle to get rid of any air pockets.
  5. With your two fingers, pull Rocco’s neck up.  With a third finger, make a triangle shape with Rocco’s neck skin.
  6. Put the needle into Rocco’s neck softly.
  7. Pull the plunger back until about 10.  If there’s blood, pull the needle out and start again with a new needle at Step #1.
  8. If there’s no blood, push the end of the plunger in a little.  Let the plunger return to 2 by itself.  If it doesn’t, gently push the plunger back to 2.
  9. Push the plunger in slowly until all the insulin is inside Rocco.
  10. Pull out the needle and rub Rocco’s neck gently.  Make sure it’s not wet  (if it’s wet, then you went through the skin too far;  if that happens, DON’T DO THESE STEPS AGAIN)
  11. Hug and kiss Rocco.  Give him baby treats to make him feel better.

Praise for Rocco
So far, Rocco’s been a rockstar.  When I put him on the special towel, he lies down on his tummy so that I can give the injection easily.  He doesn’t resist.  He doesn’t bark.  And only once has he bitten me (though he didn’t actually break skin or anything, just a lot of kerfuffle).  And has he become catatonic or lethargic?  No.  He sleeps a lot but that’s usual.  Otherwise, he is as chipper as he should be.

Wii Me: Revisited

Wii Me Challenge

Hello interested Wii Me Challenge followers!  It’s been a hearty four weeks since I ended my 10-week Wii Me Challenge.  With that end came the end of strictly watching my diet, exercising and those fear-inspiring weigh-ins.  I felt at that time that I’d reached my goal weight closely enough and had changed my eating habits for long enough that it was no longer necesssary to hold myself accountable to a weekly blog post.  It was a question of maintenance from that point on.  Well, four weeks later, I thought I’d post an update on how things have been since the last time.

I have to admit, not being held accountable by a blog post did take off some pressure to exercise daily.  In fact, I did get rather lazy that way.  My workouts decreased in a couple cases to just a mere once per week.  With nutrition, I let myself splurge with a hamburger meal each weekend and a full bacon-eggs-sausage breakfast too.  I’m trying to adopt the idea that I can be strict with my diet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, a little less strict on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then relax on the weekends.

I’ve continued taking the CLA supplement that I mentioned way back in Week 7 and I’m sure it’s been working.  I continue to try and increase my daily intake of water (–that is bloody hard, I must admit, because I just don’t care for it unless it’s really hot outside, it’s ice-cold and from a water fountain–).

So, has the weight stayed off?  Have I been able to maintain the body shape I worked hard to attain?  I’m happy to report that the answers to these questions is YES.

Wii Me: Week 10

Wii Me Challenge

Here it is: week 10 of my Wii Me Challenge is complete!  And this will be my final Wii Me post.  :sob, sob:  It’s been a great run, but I feel like the journey has made it to its natural end.  I’m not at the original goal weight, but I’m realizing that that is not the real goal.  I feel healthy, toned and slim.  Those are the real goals, despite the number.  My Wii character even became slimmer!

For everyone out there who thinks they’d like to shed a pound or ten, you can do it!  I did it in 10 weeks simply through the Wii and better eating.  A very good luck to you all!

Wii Me: Week 8

Kfbunny: Wii Me

My Mii

Wii Me ChallengeHere it is: week 8 of my Wii Me Challenge is complete!  After 8 weeks of developing a routine that involves regular exercise and nutritional eating, I’ve noticed I’ve become used to this lifestyle.  Of course, the last 4 weeks have also included working from home, so when that stops, this routine is going to be shaken up.  Still, with what I’ve learned about my body and how it responds to food and exercise, I’m confident I’ll be able to maintain.

This week’s routine varied little from the last.  I worked out using Biggest Loser Wii 3 of the 7 days, with 1 extra day just using Wii Fit Plus Yoga and Strength Training exercises to vary things up.  Most of the time, if Biggest Loser Wii hadn’t chosen a workout routine for me, I chose the 26 min Challenging Full Body workout, the exercises of which I’ve gotten used to and can anticipate without any begrudging surprise.

*Cardio –> jogging in place, punch bag, speed bag, jumping jacks, opposing arm/toe touches, mountain climber, jump rope (with and without raised knees), lumberjack wood cuts…each of these were about 30 seconds in total.
*Toning –> punches, punching with knee up, torso twists with knee up, lunges, planks, planks with leg lifts, push-ups, torso lifts from laying position, … each of these was about 30 seconds in total.

FOOD
Food remained pretty much unchanged with salads being the dominant lunch, though in lieu of chicken, I added more avocado and a fried egg.  I try to get in a fruit serving as well–this week was predominantly Fuji apples.  Dinners most often were baked honey dijon chicken with side salad or veggies, though one day I did serve whole wheat pasta with hollandaise sauce (mmmm, fatty).  I did my weekly brunch routine as well, this time with eggs benny using asparagus instead of meat.  The one big change was for my evening snack, I substituted peanut butter cookies or crackers for cucumber and red pepper slices with sundried tomato dip.

THE PHOTO RESULTS

Hope you enjoyed viewing my naked upper body last week.  This time, I thought I’d let you have a look at my face instead.  Sorry about the low-quality webcam photo from today, but you gotta work with whatcha got.  Cheers!

Where’s my neck? Oh, there it is.

From now on, any loss I’ll take with a smile.  It’s getting to the point where I’m satisfied with the results and don’t expect (or want) a big weight loss.  My goal weight is now less than 10 lbs away, and it’s always the last few that take the longest time.

Wii Me: Week 7

Kfbunny: Wii Me

My Mii

Wii Me ChallengeHere it is: week 7 of my Wii Me Challenge is complete! And damn, it was a good one that I had coming, finally!  I worked out 4 days, predominantly with Biggest Loser Wii, after warming up with Wii Fit Plus aerobics, yoga and strength training.  It basically worked out to 30 minutes of Wii Fit Plus stuff and then another 30-40 minutes of Biggest Loser.  I also started taking Jamieson’s CLA 95 supplement, an all-natural fat blocker, but stuck with only one in the morning as it upset my stomach if I took a second, which was recommended.  As a result, for the first time in 7 weeks, my BMI dipped out of “overweight” into “normal” range!

*Cardio –> jogging in place, boxing sways with upper cuts, jumping jacks, speed skater motions, opposing arm/toe touches, mountain climber, jump rope (with and without raised knees), lumberjack wood cuts…each of these were about 30 seconds in total.
*Toning –> punches, punching with knee up, torso twists with knee up, lunges, planks, planks with leg lifts, push-ups, torso lifts from laying position, … each of these was about 30 seconds in total.

FOOD
I very much tried watching my calorie intake, as Biggest Loser allows you to approximately calculate the calories you’ve eaten and drank.  Most times, I hovered around 1500-1600 calories per day, give or take a few hundred.  Lunches typically consisted of salads, which I must say I’ve grown to crave by noon.  The only day I wasn’t careful was out for a friend’s birthday, where I ate and drank whatever I wanted, probably topping in at 2300 calories.

THE PHOTO RESULTS

For the first time, I’ve decided to post some photos of the changes despite how cheesy the photos seem to be (and how shy I feel about doing so, although it’s just like if I went swimming in public, right?  By the way, I did have underwear on.).  Maybe next week, I’ll do a face portrait.  😉  People who know me have said that they can see the difference now in my face and clothes fit.  I can especially notice that my jeans have increasingly large gaps where they used to be snug.

I have about another 10 lbs to go in order to hit my goal weight/BMI.  Then, I ‘m going to go shopping for some new clothes!

Wii Me: Week 6

Kfbunny: Wii Me

My Mii

Wii Me ChallengeHere it is: week 6 of my Wii Me Challenge is complete! I tried out the Biggest Loser Wii Interactive Fitness this week, and cut down on the Wii Fit Plus.  I usually did the Free Step for 30 mins on Wii Fit Plus and whatever workout Biggest Loser had planned for me, which included the following types of exercises:

*Cardio –> jogging in place, boxing sways with upper cuts, jumping jacks, jumping jacks with sumo stances, mountain climber, jump rope (obviously with no rope)… each of these were about 30 seconds in total.
*Toning –> punches, punching with knee up, torso twists with knee up, lunges, planks, planks with leg lifts or arm up and leg lifts, seated ab lifts, tricep lifts… each of these was about 30 seconds in total.

These exercises in my training routine were set up in about 30-minute sessions, with two or three circuits combining all these exercises in various orders.  I have to say, I sweat much more than I ever did with Wii Fit Plus.  On the downside, I ended up gaining weight over the week for the first time since this challenge started.  I’m not entirely sure if I can chock it up to an increase in muscle or fat, considering overall I decreased the total time I worked out each day.

FOOD
I didn’t do the best this week regarding my food intake either.  My bad, I baked some peanut butter crunch cookies and felt that it was ok to eat them each day given I was working out.  Wrong.
